Being a Student Member in HAMK Ltd opened new doors

Johannes Asikainen tells what is like to be a student member in HAMK Ltd Board. Read more about applying from here.

As the student representative of Häme University of Applied Sciences Ltd, the years have rolled quickly, and as the end of my term is near, the feeling will inevitably become a bit sad.

Operating on HAMK Ltd Board has been a great and educational experience, which I can warmly recommend to everyone, especially if you are interested in social issues, administration and organizational activities, and the protection of students’ interests.

Being a student representative in the Board has been a great place to learn something new. I had an opportunity to meet new great people and it has opened completely new doors for me. You will thoroughly learn about the board operations of a limited company and how the university of applied sciences as a whole operates. Wading through bureaucracy and reading financial statements is not always a treat and can feel heavy in places, but once you get into this, you can even expect to be able to read different policies and comment on them.

As a student representative, I have had to travel to seminars and other meetings, which I have personally liked. Working and the board meetings are on the main campus – but due to the corona, the meetings has shifted strongly to the digital side, so it has been easy to represent this year from home.

The board sets the broad guidelines for the HAMK, and the voice of the students must be heard and reflected in making these decisions. The board discusses HAMK Ltd operating and financial plan and outlines strategy and financial management, as well as the affairs of HAMK’s subsidiaries Hami Oy and HAMK Akatemia Oy.
Institutes of higher education are for students, and it is important that one of the students is closely involved in the activities of the Board.

Häme University of Applied Sciences Ltd student representative is an opportunity which you won’t have after studies. If you wondered even for a moment if this would be a place for you, then feel free to apply!
