There are interested people in applying to the board, and we have received good questions. Here we try to answer the most frequently asked questions.
How long does the term of the Board take?
One calendar year, aka. from beginning of January to end of December.
What are the benefits of operating on the Board?
Sometimes there is even talk of getting bored that you get skills for working life. But it is just true. You gain experience and skills on the board that you may not learn in your education.
After the Board year, you will be able to show, among other things, that you know how to organize both small and large events. Get experience of project work and project management. You will also have a better understanding of the decision-making processes, after which it will be easier to influence decision-making even in working life.
But best of all, a year of Board brings with it tremendous new people. You can create networks and get to know people from different backgrounds, fields and even all over Finland.
What do I need to know in advance?
You will do well if you are cooperative by nature and are eager to learn new things. Not every area of responsibility would be familiar, no harm. The Board will be trained on its work. The Student Union is looking for people who have a good sense of accomplishment and the ability to take action.
The technical skills, which are required, is to be able to use the Office 365 platform used in HAMK.
Read more information from here, what are the requirements of actors.
Are there language proficiency requirements?
The official operating language of the Student Union is Finnish. This means that, for example, the minutes of meetings are always made in Finnish. You don’t need to be a native speaker, but you are required to have basic skills in the Finnish language.
Since the Student Union is a legitimate organization, the actors must understand the content of the contracts and agreements they are making.
How is the selection made?
The board is elected at the inaugural meeting of the Council of Representatives, you can run there.
If there are more candidates than seats, the Council of Representatives will vote on the persons to be elected. The Council of Representatives usually asks a few questions from applicants before the vote, but there is no need to worry about it, as the members of the Council of Representatives are ordinary students.
If you are unable to attend, please submit a written, free-form application in advance. Send the application to pj@hamko.fi. The applications received will be presented to the Council at the meeting.
What are the roles in the Board that are open?
A member of the Board, Vice President and President. From this link you find more detailed introduction.
The Boardt has different processes, how to apply for them?
The Board decides on the division of areas of responsibility according to each interest.
How much time does it take?
Operating in the Board takes varying amounts of time each week. There is no exact amount of time, as everyone has different resources. Due to the nature of the project, more is sometimes done, e.g. when organizing events, and sometimes less is done. But most usually complete their studies at the target time during the government year.
Is the Board able to participate in the events it organizes?
For some, yes, others play an organizing role. It largely depends on how much you need to do during the event. For example, the board members were able to participate to Café Appro. In some events, the board is only the organizing party. But even “just” organizing events is really fun!
I would be interested in doing just events, is it possible?
The board recruits an event team each year, and by joining it, you can only do events or even just an individual event. In the event team, you get to see and experience the events from the perspective of the organizer. The event team is also a great way to meet new people at HAMK.
