June is Pride Month, a time when we celebrate the rights, history and, above all, human dignity of gender and sexual minorities. It is also a reminder that equality and a safe space belong to everyone – also in educational institutions and student life.
For many students, studying is not just about books and courses, but also about finding themselves. Many students are still searching for themselves: their own place, identity and community. Who am I? Where do I belong? It is a big deal if a school or campus offers a space where you can be openly yourself – without fear of discrimination, stares, being invisible or comments.
Pride is not just a celebration. It is also actions in everyday life: non-discriminatory language, open spaces, safe adults and a student culture where everyone can be proud of themselves. When the correct pronouns are used for the student. When the tutor does not assume the gender of anyone’s dating partner. When a rainbow flag appears on the school bulletin board or a safe space workshop is organized. These are small but meaningful things. And at the same time a promise that our learning environment will not tolerate bullying, homophobia, transphobia or oppressive structures.
This summer, as marches, flags, and colors fill the streets, let’s remember that every student – regardless of their identity – has the right to feel like they belong. The right to learn, grow, and flourish.
💛💚💙💜❤️
Happy Pride Month everyone! Let’s support each other today and every day.
