Sustainable development and the values associated with it help create an ethically, socially, and environmentally responsible student community that not only meets today’s challenges but also prepares for those of the future. This is why sustainable development is important for the student union.
What is sustainable development?
The United Nations World Commission on Environment and Development describes sustainable development as follows: “Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Its three fundamental elements have been shaped as ecological, economic, and social and cultural sustainability. The goals of sustainable development aim for people to learn to live in harmony with nature and with each other.”
How is sustainability considered in the daily life of the student union?
Environmental sustainability
- When traveling between campuses and to events, we prioritize public transportation and carpooling.
- We prefer plant-based food in our catering.
- We recycle our waste and have reduced the use of disposable tableware.
- When we gather together, such as for collaborative work weekends, we cook meals ourselves and only buy as much as needed to avoid food waste.
- When planning meetings, we always assess on a case-by-case basis whether it is necessary for everyone to be in the same place or if remote participation could minimize unnecessary travel.
Social sustainability
- We support the well-being of employees and volunteers. We keep discussions on the topic ongoing, ensure everyone has personal time, and help in sharing the workload.
- We provide thorough onboarding for new members to ensure the beginning is less overwhelming amidst all the new tasks.
- We have fun outside of work tasks as well, organizing recreational days/evenings where we can discuss topics other than work. We encourage and support each other during our free time and are there for each other.
Economic sustainability
- We order a lot of patches and other materials, such as those for new students’ Gift Bags. When choosing suppliers, we emphasize domestic production and sustainable practices.
- We maintain financial stability and sound financial management. Financial monitoring is regular, and purchases are made based on necessity.
